In addition, there is a lab segment of the course where students will be conducting experiments to investigate and confirm different principles in physics, such as looking at how momentum is conserved during the collision between two Lego cars. Marine Ecology is a study of the importance of earth’s oceans to wildlife, the global environment and humanity. Through a combination of dynamic presentations / demonstrations, Socratic-style dialogues, hands-on activities (including some optional dissection), field trips and an individual project, students will learn about the major zoological groups, population dynamics, the oceans’ influence on climate, sustainability, essential ecological concepts and much more. Chemical reactions happen everywhere constantly and they define everything from cognitive responses to physical changes. In order to delve into the world of reactions we will look at chemical activity on a molecular level. The course is an in-depth look at different types of chemical reactions and properties of chemical reactions. It will highlight the historical relevance of reactions, such as the discovery of fire (a combustion reaction), mechanics of reactions, and application of reactions for innovative solutions. The Art of Science Fiction and Fantasy
This class is for anyone who has an interest or love for reading science fiction or fantasy, for anyone who dreams about made-up worlds, wonders about the boundaries of space, or thinks about the distant future. This class aims to prepare students for the world of academic essay and formal writing. Throughout the semester we will learn a variety of different types of essay writing, along with important skills such as documentation, grammar and vocabulary building, and developing important proofreading and editing skills. Creative Storytelling for Creative Media
This class is a natural progression of last semester’s “Divining the Creative Wellspring: A Creative Writing Course” which utilized multiple approaches to encourage students to write from a deeply creative “right brain” space versus a more analytical one. In this class we will learn the ins and outs of conceptualizing, scripting, and storyboarding for short film and animation, video game development, commercials, and content for talk and/or variety shows. This is an all-level creative class that will explore the writing world through a variety of styles, genres, and hands-on activities. We will do various creative exercises, explore different types of poetry, learn about and try our hands at writing short fiction, discuss the elements of the novel, and engage in peer workshops. Introduction to Composition – Junior High
This composition course is geared towards younger students who have less experience with the mechanics of writing. We will focus on developing an understanding of grammar and vocabulary, and will begin writing short academic pieces. We will also read and discuss short passages, and engage in various activities and games to help students become comfortable writing in a clear, fluent way. This class deals with all aspects of producing an ongoing variety show that showcases the ideas and talents of our amazing students. Calling all film and digital art makers! Are you into digital video, projections, stop motion and 2D animation? How about using digital creative tools to create vector and raster images that can be used in a variety of other applications? In this session you will produce, direct and edit commercials, skits, and public service announcements you create in your writing class. Then you will see your work organized and exhibited on BDA-TV! FOREIGN LANGUAGES
Japanese Language Through Culture and Film
Students will learn the basic elements of speaking, reading, and writing Japanese in this class. Some students might already have some background or exposure to the Japanese language or culture, and some may be complete newcomers to the tradition. Through expanding knowledge of Japanese culture, exposure to film and manga (comics), and learning a little about Japanese history, students will acquire a deeper understanding of another culture, and will also build language skills that can either be a foundation for more in-depth language learning, or could simply help them better understand the comics and films they are interested in. Join the Band – A Performance and Recording Odyssey
Practice at home all you like, but there is no substitute for the experience of making music with other people. In this class, students who have mastered the basics of their instruments will work on playing and writing songs together as an ensemble. We’ll begin by learning to play songs that we already know and figuring out what makes them work, and we will move on to writing our own songs using what we’ve learned.
